Two new cases of COVID-19 are being reported in Manitoba Thursday, bringing the provincial total positive and probably positive cases to 308.

Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin explained these latest cases are household contacts of an initial travel-related case outside of Canada.

He noted however, one of the positive individuals did go out in public during the period before they started to exhibit symptoms.

Public Health advises this individual attended the Home Depot on Bishop Grandin Boulevard on June 12 and attended the Kenaston Boulevard Walmart on June 13.

"This individual was not showing symptoms at the time which makes this low-risk, and reports show both of these locations had policies in place to ensure there was physical distancing between patrons, so this is an extremely low-risk situation," stressed Dr. Roussin.

The public is encouraged to seek testing if symptoms develop.

Meantime, Dr. Roussin says there are no details yet as to when Manitobans will have access to a national voluntary COVID-19 contact tracing app announced by the prime minister today. The tech is set to launch in Ontario on July 2nd.

Dr. Roussin noted however, this app won't replace the manual process that's used for more than just COVID-19.

"Public Health contact traces many of the reportable illnesses and we're quite used to dealing with multi-jurisdictional issues with that," he explained. "So we'll see people from out of province who had out of province contacts, or may have been a contact of an out of province case of say, Meningococcal meningitis. We have contacts through various jurisdictions to notify of those contacts an to follow up, so that process has been going on right from the beginning."

Meantime, officials are monitoring eight active cases of the novel coronavirus in Manitoba. No one is currently hospitalized. To date, 293 Manitobans have recovered from COVID-19 and the number of related deaths remains at seven

An additional 828 laboratory tests were performed Wednesday, bringing the total number of tests performed since early February to 55,743.
