Residents in Manitou need not be wary following reports of a person canvassing door-to-door in the community and surrounding area.

On Friday, it was reported that staff at Manitou School received calls earlier in the week from residents saying they had been visited by representatives claiming to be raising money for the Manitou School breakfast and lunch clubs.

Because school officials aren’t currently running any fund raisers, law enforcement was notified of the suspicious activity.

Upon investigation, Pembina Valley RCMP advise the individual was in fact representing a legitimate organization. A spokesperson confirms the volunteer was canvassing on behalf of the Children’s Joy Foundation, an organization that occasionally does visit the area.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency's registered charities search index, the Children's Joy Foundation is based in Surrey, B.C. It's stated goals are to raise money to provide assistance for childcare residential facility improvements and nutrition programs in the Philippines, as well as provide assistance to the school district in Surrey, B.C.

While the RCMP doesn’t want to discourage people from reporting suspicious activity, the spokesperson says in this case it appears the volunteer was legitimate.
