The town of Roland recently installed a disc golf course for students and the community to use.

The course is on the Roland Elementary School grounds, and Principal Brandy Chevalier says the idea came through a parent survey.

"One of the suggestions that came up several times was having more opportunity for play, particularly for our middle years and upper elementary students. Disc golf is an activity that has been growing in the area and is something that students of all ages can participate in."

To get the course up and running the school partnered with Chantal Chevalier, the Roland Community Committee, and Southern Health.

"Earlier this winter they also helped to fund a mindful stretching weekly program similar to yoga as an extracurricular opportunity for our students over lunches," she adds.

Everyone involved wanted to make sure that whatever they chose was also something that could be used by any member of the community, not just students.

Chevalier adds, "the disc golf course directly complements Roland School's Physical Literacy programming and allows students and community members to participate in the daily, lifelong physical activity that we so strongly advocate for.

Students were the first to try out the new course at their sports day before school was out for the summer. The physical education department at Roland Elementary also looks forward to utilizing the course next fall.

The disc golf targets were funded by Southern Health, Prairie Rose School Division's Healthy Schools Grant from the Province of Manitoba and Roland School's budget
