For the second time in less than a week strong to severe thunderstorms rolled through the Pembina Valley Tuesday, once again bringing gusty winds, rainfall and some hail to the region.
"For the most part, based on Rainwatcher reports and RADAR imagery, these storms were not as intense as the series of storms which hammered the area
Friday," explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. "A cold front crossing the province was the trigger for Tuesday's storms. They were brief, but relatively intense."Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were in effect for less than an hour for the Municipality of Rhineland and R.M. of Montcalm, and were ended before 7 p.m.
Maria Wiebe, who lives in the Kane area, submitted several photos of the Loonie to Toonie size hail they found after the storm rolled through. Initially she thought the hailstones were much smaller, until she had the chance to look around her yard, and discovered the much bigger stones pictured on the right-hand side.
Rainfall totals were well below what they were last Friday, with Manitoba Agriculture's Weather Station network recording the following totals:
Dominion City 10mm
Winkler 6mm
Altona (Rainwatcher reading), Kane, Morris 5mm
Elm Creek, Manitou 3mm
Sumner noted the passage of Tuesday's cold front will start a slide back toward seasonal temperatures Wednesday, with below average temperatures expected for late this week and the coming weekend.
"An upper level low that will eventually station itself near Hudson Bay will drag down much cooler air to Southern Manitoba later this week," said Sumner. "In addition to that, the long range models are starting to show the potential for a potent Colorado Low like system impacting the province Saturday or Sunday. It's still too early to say exactly what the timeline will be, or when it may exactly arrive, but the potential alone means we could be in for another round of precipitation Saturday and/or Sunday."
