Generally when you're talking about Winkler teenager Tristan Peters, it has something to do with his latest baseball achievement. After all, he was Manitoba's Bantam A player of the year in 2015 and one of 3 underage players representing Manitoba at the Western Canada Summer Games. He was also asked to represent Manitoba at the AAA Bantam Nationals. But there's something even more unique to Tristan Peters than his baseball skills. Something that you'll only find in 0.2 % of the world's population. Tristan Peters is a leap year baby.

"It was our first child so we were obviously very eager for it to all happen, but Jake (Tristan's father) was very determined it would be the 29th. He told me that from the beginning. I went into labour on the 28th. I was still begging that it would be before the 29th, but he waited for the 29th to be born." Gaby Peters noted that staff weren't even sure at first if her son Tristan could actually be registered with this unique date. "At first we didn't know if we could legally put his birth date as the 29th. They were questioning that for a little while... We were wondering too, when would we celebrate his birthday. That was a difficult thing for us. So we kind of decided (that) he was born in February, not March. So we usually tried the 28th or around about there."

As for the big day that only comes once every four years, The Peters family make sure that they go all out.
"I remember his fourth birthday we had I think it was close to a hundred people at our house just celebrating...That was actually the year he threw his soother away. I know it's four years old but he was technically only one!"

Embarrassing family anecdotes aside, Tristan Peters enjoys having this unique birthday. "I count myself lucky. I'd way rather have my birthday on the 29th than any other day. It just feels more special to me. I have a super-special birthday every four years." Tristan and Gaby planned at New York trip to celebrate his 16th or technically his fourth birthday this year.  Tristan's mom ensured she has a few surprises up her sleeve during their visit.

When we asked Gaby Peters if having a leap baby was overall a good thing, she explained that they're very thankful. It's a very special thing to have. She had to mask the chuckle as she added, "...and you know, he'll be forever young!"

Happy 4th birthday Tristan!
