Local spikeball players are hoping to find some more competition by hosting tournaments for the popular backyard game.

"You have a net in the middle and you have two teams of two. You get three hits each. One team serves. If you hit the net the other team has to hit the ball. You have a three-hit limit and you try to hit the net again, and it goes back and forth like that," says Jaime Friesen.

The net is round like a mini trampoline, the ball is the size of a grapefruit, and the net is about six inches off the ground. It's a variation on volleyball and you play to 21 points.

He says, "my friends kind of introduced me to it. We also played it a lot in gym during school."

One thing lacking in the area is competition, so Friesen and his friends are hoping to run weekly games and a handful of tournaments during summer.

"It's super exciting because usually, it's just me and a couple of my friends playing, but now we have a lot of people that we can actually play with."

As well, the group is planning a Katie Cares Classic tournament where all the funds raised will go to the organization.

Friesen explains, "I was one of the founders of it. We were all sitting around a fire and just playing spikeball, and we came up with this tournament and decided the funds should go to Katie Cares."

The date for the tournament is to be determined. Anyone looking for information on taking part in weekly games or the upcoming Katie Cares Classic can find it on the WinklerSpikeball Instagram.
