The Pembina Valley Twisters dropped a 3-2 decision to the St. James Canucks Sunday night in Morris. Rory Neill scored twice for the defending Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League champions who evened the best-of-seven final at a game apiece. Mike Heppner and Merek Degraeve replied for the Twisters. Game three goes Tuesday night at the Ab McDonald Arena in Winnipeg. 


Jayce Legaarden scored his sixth goal of the playoffs with 53 seconds left in the second period and Avery Anderson potted the go-ahead goal at 10:21 of the third period as the Winkler Flyers shaded the Virden Oil Capitals 2-1 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Malachi Klassen made 18 saves in net for the Flyers who knotted the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's best-of-seven semifinal at a game apiece. Roux Bazin had the lone goal for the Oil Capitals. Game three will be played Tuesday night at the Centennial Arena. 


The Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Brandon Wheat Kings have qualified for the Telus Cup. Brady Turko scored 2:21 into overtime to lift Brandon past the Saskatoon Blazers 1-0 in the West Regional championship game Sunday at Hockey for All Centre in Winnipeg. Burke Hood made 30 saves in recording the shutout. The Wheat Kings are the first Manitoba team to win the West Regional and advance to the Telus Cup since the Winnipeg Thrashers won the National U18 AAA championship in 2011. The Brandon Wheat Kings also captured the West Regional and the National championship in 2004. The 2024 Telus Cup will take place April 24th-30th in Membertou, Nova Scotia. 


Canada will play its final preliminary round game against the United States tonight at the 2024 World Women's Hockey Championship in Utica, New York. Both teams have 3-0 records, and the winner will finish first in Group A. Team Canada blanked Czechia 5-0 on Sunday. Ann-Renée Desbiens stopped 13 shots in recording the shutout. Kristin O'Neill had two goals and an assist. Danielle Serdachny, Renata Fast and Laura Stacey also scored for Canada. Ste. Anne's Jocelyne Larocque drew an assist on Stacey's third period goal. 


Ville Heinola scored 1:26 into overtime to lift the Manitoba Moose past the Chicago Wolves 3-2 at Canada Life Centre. Kyle Capobianco and C.J. Suess scored in regulation for the Moose. Thomas Milic registered 34 saves in net for Manitoba.


Deb McCreanor of La Salle and Zach Wasylik of the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg won the 2024 Curling Club Championships Sunday in Gimli. McCreanor, Trisha Hill, Michelle Buchanan and Jennifer Cawson defeated Jennifer Clark-Rouire of Fort Garry 5-4. Wasylik, Jack Hykaway, Josh Harding and Graham Normand outscored Corey Chambers of Fort Garry 8-7 in an extra end. McCreanor and Wasylik will represent Manitoba in the fall of 2024 at the national championships in Barrie, Ontario. 


Niklas Edin of Sweden won gold for the seventh time at the World Men's Curling Championship. Edin played a wide out-turn draw and found the back four-foot with his final rock of the 10th end and beat Canada's Brad Gushue 6-5 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. It's the fourth silver medal earned by Gushue, Mark Nichols and Geoff Walker after earning second-place medals in 2018, 2022 and 2023. E.J. Harnden has earned three in his career, his first being from 2013 with skip Brad Jacobs, along with 2023.
