The Provincial High School Badminton championships were held this past weekend at Sport Manitoba in downtown Winnipeg. The junior varsity champions were Preston Fazekas of Linden Christian in boys singles; Yujia Qin of Dakota in girls singles; Tristan Cousineau & Russell Deluz of College Jeanne Sauve in boys doubles; Morgahn Bosko & Sarah Dupuis of Gabrielle Roy in girls doubles and Kendra Hancock & Noah Oman of St. Norbert in mixed doubles. Notre Dame won the A-AA Provincial JV team banner while College Jeanne Sauve captured the AAA-AAAA banner. The varsity champions were Anson Chen of St. Paul's in boys singles; Ranya Narwal of Fort Richmond in girls singles; Gia Khang Nguyen & Eilijah Revilla of Miles Macdonnell in boys doubles; Caroline McConnell & Leigha Kristof of Reston in girls doubles and Laure Dizengremel & William Poudrier of Notre Dame in mixed doubles. Minnedosa won the A-AA Provincial varsity team banner while Fort Richmond captured the AAA-AAAA banner. 


Canada won gold at the 2024 World U18 Hockey Championship in Espoo, Finland. Team Canada scored three third period power play goals during a five-minute major and defeated the United States 6-4. Medicine Hat Tigers forward Gavin McKenna had a hat trick and set a new Canadian tournament goals record with his 10th goal into an empty net on Sunday. He also finished with 20 points, the most by a Canadian at a single U18 men’s worlds. Brandon Wheat Kings defenseman Charlie Elick and forward Roger McQueen were on Canada's roster. 


Toronto defeated Ottawa 5-2 Sunday, officially eliminating Ottawa from PWHL playoff contention. Ottawa entered the game needing a regulation win to claim the final playoff spot. With the result, Boston will enter the playoffs as the third seed and Minnesota is fourth.  As the first-place team, Toronto will have 24 hours to select their playoff semifinal opponent between Boston and Minnesota and will announce its pick at 6:30 p.m. via the team’s social media. Natalie Spooner scored twice, including the game-winning-goal with just over five minutes remaining in the third period. Brandon's Kristen Campbell had a season-high 41 saves, earning her league-leading 16th victory of the season. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Fish, who managed just two hits, will play their fourth of five pre-season games this afternoon in Kansas City against the Monarchs. Winnipeg will open the 2024 American Association season on May 9th in Texas against the Cleburne Railroaders. The Goldeyes home opener is Tuesday, May 21st versus the Chicago Dogs.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released American defensive back Anthony Blue. The rookie camp begins Wednesday while main camp starts Sunday. The Bombers first pre-season game is Monday, May 20th in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.


Winkler Storm (2) won their 2024 Manitoba Major Soccer League season opener. George Siemens, Koen Unruh and Amery Roberts did the goal scoring as the Storm defeated FCNW NexGen 3-1 Sunday in Winkler. The Storm (2) are playing in Division 2 this season.
