Daniel Isaak scored 16:42 into double overtime to lift the Winkler Flyers past the Winnipeg Blues 4-3 Friday night at the Centennial Arena. Justin Svenson, Dayton Kiesman and Josh Beauchemin scored in regulation for the Flyers who evened the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven opening round series at two games a piece. Dylan Meilun made 31 saves. Game five goes Sunday in Winkler.


The Pembina Valley Twisters gave up four unanswered goals and lost 4-3 to the Transcona Railer Express. Riley Johnson, who scored the overtime winner in game one, beat Pembina Valley goaltender Logan Enns 1:56 into OT Friday night at the East End Arena. The Railer Express lead the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven semifinal two games to one. Tyler Van Deynze had a pair of first period goals for Pembina Valley while Curtis Rebeck extended the Twisters lead to 3-0 with a power play marker at 7:25 of the middle frame. Game four is scheduled for Sunday in Morris.


The Westman Wildcats are Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champions. Paige Kozak and Makenna Beard scored two goals each as Westman defeated the Winnipeg Ice 5-2 Friday night in Hartney and swept the best-of-five final in three straight. The Wildcats will host either the Regina Rebels or Notre Dame Hounds in the Manitoba-Saskatchewan best-of-three series to determine who advances to the Esso Cup in Alberta.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice were both winners in the Western Hockey League. Ethan Kruger made 35 saves as Brandon beat the Raiders 4-2 in Prince Albert. Nolan Ritchie, Brett Hyland, Nate Danielson and Chad Nychuk did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings. Daniel Hauser made 17 saves for his eighth shutout of the season as the Ice blanked the Pats 7-0 in Regina. Zach Benson had a goal and three assists for Winnipeg.


Evan Cormier made 20 saves and Evan Polei scored twice as the Manitoba Moose blanked the Toronto Marlies 5-0 at Canada Life Centre. Mikey Eyssimont, David Gustafsson and Johnathan Kovacevic also scored for the Moose.


Manitoba champion Jordon McDonald finished fourth at the 2022 Canadian U-21 Curling Championships in Stratford, Ontario. McDonald, Reece Hamm, Elias Huminicki and Alexandre Fontaine lost 11-5 to Daymond Bernath of Saskatchewan in the bronze medal game.


The 2022 World Men’s Curling Championship begins today in Las Vegas. Brad Gushue will play his round robin opener at 4 p.m. against Lukas Klima of the Czech Republic and then meet Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway at 9 p.m.


Canada will face Belgium, Croatia and Morocco in Group F in the opening group stage of the World Cup in Qatar this November. The Canadian men are ranked 38th in the world compared to number two for Belgium, 16 for Croatia and 24 for Morocco.
