Brendan Turnbull scored the overtime winner, which was his third goal of the game with just over four minutes left in the first overtime to edge the Prairie Mountain Mustangs 6-5, and win their second consecutive Zone 4 High School Hockey League championship.

"I honestly don't remember," said Turnbull. "I just remember getting the puck in front of the net, and no one was there. I love the backhand. I saw it (an open spot) and just took the chance. It just happened so fast, it was amazing."

Evan Wuerch got behind the Mustang defence and put one top corner just over two minutes into the first to get the Thunder up 1-0. It wasn't long after that the Mustangs captain Jeremie Goderis netted his first of two on the night to knot the game up at one a piece.

The middle frame was Morden's period, as they beat Prairie Mountain's goaltender Justin Jamault three times. Brayden Jonasson, and Turnbull scored only :27 seconds apart to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Keane Boucher also tallied for the Thunder, while Dylan Ducquay replied for the Mustangs.

With one more period left to play, it was the Thunder's game to lose, and the Mustangs did their best to make that happen.

Turnbull scored his second of the game, to make it 5-2 for Morden, but that ignited a fire under the Mustangs, who went on to score three answered goals and tied the game at five.

Eli Carels found the back of the net just over a minute apart to make it 5-4, and Goderis beat Morden's Jesse Ross, who made 30 saves in the game, to once again tie the game.

"It always sucks to lose in overtime like that," said Mustangs coach Albert Ducquay. "You can't prepare yourself for a result like that. Especially the way we played in that third period. We played with a lot of emotion, compete and a lot of drive. We just came up on the wrong end of the stick."

So, off to overtime we went.

Just under six minutes into the extra frame Turnbull completed his hat trick after poking the puck between the Mustangs defence's legs, and was left wide open in front of the net. Turnbull made no mistake, and tucked it top shelf, just under the bar, and the Thunder were champions for the second straight year.

Jamault made 38 saves in the loss for Prairie Mountain.

Morden forward Cade Kowalski was named the playoffs Most Valuable Player, after recording 4 goals, and 17 points in 6 games.

"It feels good. The guys really helped me a lot," explained Kowalski. "Anyone of our guys could have won it. They worked really hard all year. They deserve this."

The Thunder will compete at the Provincial "AAAA" High School Hockey Championship next weekend in Winnipeg while the Mustangs and Morris Mavericks will be at the Provincial "AA" Championship in Minnedosa.

"Just play like we did in this game here. The character, the compete, and the passion," shared Ducquay when asked about the key to success at Provincials. "That's what we need from all of the players. They have to come ready to play. We know what we can get out of them. If we can get that out of our players, I think we should be just fine."
