Conservative opposition leader Hugh Mcfadyen says he can understand the frustration university and college students are feeling over drastic hikes in tuition fees.

The University of Manitoba is requesting tuition hikes as high as 114 per cent for at least eight programs. Mcfadyen says for 10 years the province had a politically motivated artificial feeze on tuition levels, and now that the feeze has been lifted, students are going to pay a big price. He says there needs to be some moderation in terms of the size of those increases, and he suggests students and their families need some predictability on how much a program is going to cost them. He says that predictability is not there right now. He adds the large year to year increases that we're going to see now could have been avoided.
