The new Winkler Golf Course clubhouse project has hit $1.5 million in fundraising thanks to a major donation from Access Credit Union (ACU).

On Tuesday, ACU presented the golf course board with a cheque for $50,000.

ACU President and CEO Larry Davey explains the project fits well with their vision for supporting big community projects.

"It's something that was required in Winkler," Davey says. "We're happy to see it being built... we see this as a great long-term project."

"There's a lot of enthusiasm and the corporate community in Winkler has, again, been just so generous," Winkler Golf Course President Jake Giesbrecht says.

The total budget for the new clubhouse is closer to $2 million, though Giesbrecht says they're comfortable with a debt load of $500,000.

The new facility will bring the pro shop and Mulligans restaurant under one roof. Once the new clubhouse is open and Mulligans is able to move into the new facility, the current Mulligans building will be demolished and that area will become a part of the parking lot. The current pro shop and cart shed will stay for cart storage as well as storage for the members.

Looking ahead to the next golf season, Giesbrecht notes despite an unusually dry summer and then an overly wet fall their water reservoirs are in great shape.
