Work rapidly continues on the new arena in Winkler.

Winkler Mayor Martin Harder notes work ramps up on the site adjacent to the original arena as more walls and beam structures go up.

"You can now see the parameters of the building," Harder says, adding currently crews working to connect the new structure to the existing arena.

"We're pretty happy with the progress being made."

While the opening was originally scheduled around Manitoba 150 celebrations in November, Harder notes those funds have been deferred to next year.

"There won't be a grand opening this year, but hoping the soft opening stays on target for November," he says.

Depending on the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 situation, Harder says there's a real possibility residents will get their first skate on the new ice surface before the year's end.

"It'll be nice to have something there ready to celebrate when this health situation ends."
