A 22-year-old Altona man has been arrested following an eventful night for the Altona Police Service, according to a media release.

At around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, police responded to an intrusion alarm at the Altona Cleaners, located along 4th Street SE, where they found evidence of an attempted break-in.

Police patrolled the area and located a suspicious vehicle being operated erratically in the southeast part of town. The vehicle sped away when police attemped to pull it over.

It was later found abandoned in the northeast section of Altona. Winkler Police Service helped Altona members locate the man who was found hiding in bushes near the vehicle.

The man was immediately arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police. He was additionally charged with theft of a motor vehicle, break-and-enter, possession of break-in tools, impaired operation, failure to comply with undertaking, and failure to comply with a recognizance.

He has been remanded into custody with a future court date in Altona. He was currently before the courts on other charges.

Altona Police Service officers responded to an accident on June 20 around 6:30 in the evening.

Police found a vehicle had struck a hydro pole, prior to fleeing the scene at the intersection of 6th Avenue and 1st Street NW in Altona.

Police followed a fluid trail and located the vehicle, which had damage consistent to colliding with the hydro pole, in a parking lot of an apartment complex.

A 54-year-old Winnipeg man has since been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and driving without a valid drivers licence.
