Over 60 countries around the world host a Terry Fox Run in the fall, and one of the only runs in Southern Manitoba took place this Sunday in Carman.

Linda Sylvester is a co-organizer of the run and says she did the run in the 1990's while working at one of the schools, but wanted to continue hosting one for the community after she retired.

"I really believe in it and during the time that I've done this I've met Betty Fox and I've been very passionate about it and the research."

She says cancer is something that impacts many friends and families in the Pembina Valley so it's a great cause that can always use more support.

"Although it seems there's a lot of money gone into cancer research, I think it's very complex. Its come so far and they're diagnosing earlier, and there's a lot more survivors," says Sylvester, a cancer survivor herself.

There are many great causes to donate to through fundraising walks and runs, but this is one that she says is close to her heart.

"Now Terry Fox isn't a memory for a lot of people, it's just a story. I do remember him, he'd be about the same age as me."

Sylvester hopes that people will connect his story to the importance of donating to further research efforts.

"79 cents of every dollar goes to the cause itself. Not to administration, not to any gifts or t-shirts, it you want any of that you have to buy it. The money goes directly to research."

Around 70 people participated this year and raised at least $2,640. Sylvester adds, "it was a beautiful day and a great tribute to the young man and his family who began a campaign that has helped so many."

She looks forward to next year when the Terry Fox Run will celebrate its 40th year.
