November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the time where Genesis House promotes the work they do in the community and asks for support.

Genesis House houses women and children that are at-risk for domestic abuse and run a 24-hour crisis line.

"November is just the month where we put a lot of effort into making sure we're out there and trying to make sure we're out there where different people are," says Ang Braun, Executive Director, noting that they don't have a visible storefront for people to remember them by.

They chronically struggle with collecting enough funding from the government to increase their programming, so this campaign allows them to gather up community support from as many people as possible.

"We've got lots of things happening this year, we've brought back some old favourites. We're bringing back the 'Peace Begins at Home' hockey games again. Right now we've got four games organized."

Braun says the teams wear white jerseys while spectators can wear white ribbons to open up more conversation around domestic violence.

These games will be hosted by Northlands Parkway Collegiate Nighthawks on Nov 12, the Pembina Valley Hawks girls on Nov 15, the Winkler Flyers on Nov 16, and Garden Valley Collegiate on Nov 26.

"'Power of the PJs" is back again, so the South Central Regional Libraries will be collecting pyjamas and other types of bedtime things that you would need.”

She says they hope to collect 65 pairs for women and 80 pairs for children.

"The idea of Pajamas really resonates with the community because it is something that everyone needs. It is a tangible gift that you know will bring comfort and warmth to the person that receives it."

Nov 2 they will be at Superstore in Winkler with a display table to offer residents more information. At the end of the month, they also look forward to their new event, "Unmasking Domestic Violence," a masquerade gala on Nov 23.
