A heat warning has been issued for the entire Red River Valley and Pembina Valley as humidex values are expected to reach 38 to 40 degrees Celsius over parts of Southern Manitoba Monday.

In order to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion, Environment Canada is urging people to drink plenty of water and stay in a cool place as well as check on older family, friends, and neighbours to make sure they too are staying cool and drinking plenty of water.

According to the weather agency's web site, symptoms of heat illness include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

Another suggestion for reducing heat risk is to schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.

As for pets, owners are reminded to never keep their furry friends inside a parked vehicle.
