The City of Morden is looking for resident participation in a short survey concerning a potential cost-share program for a Low Flow Fixture Replacement Program.

Deputy City Manager-Operations, Santokh Randhawa, says filling out this survey will help the City answer many questions about doing this project, and will guide decisions moving forward.

"The purpose of sending out this survey is first, to understand how many properties don't have low flow fixtures, and if you want to replace those high flow fixtures with low flow fixtures." Randhawa adds this will answer some questions officials have. "What will be the project cost? How much reduction in the usage will we achieve with that? And how much savings we will be having on the upgrade side of the water treatment plant and waste water treatment plant?"

Randhawa says Morden's usage per person is higher than it is in Winnipeg.

"Right now, our per capita demand in Morden is in the range of 280 litres per day. The City of Winnipeg is 220. The aim is to reduce that per capita usage, which will save us on our water treatment production process as well. What we spend there, it will delay the expansions of the plant that we will need to do, it will create more room in our lagoon system, and the new waste water treatment system we want to build will be a smaller size than what we are originally planning, if we can bring our usage down. So, those will be the major benefits."

The simple survey asks for your name, address and contact information, and if you would be interested in replacing your old fixtures with low flow/high efficiency ones. If you say "yes," you are asked to report the number of old sink, toilet and shower fixtures in your home. If you say "no", the survey ends, but still provides direction the City needs to proceed with the project.

There is a YouTube video attached to the survey that shows how to gauge if you have low or high flow fixtures in your home. Randhawa mentions there are more benefits to knowing and reducing the level of water flow in your home.

"Reducing your usage allows you to get the most from your existing facilities, and you don't need to expand or upgrade them. So with that in mind, we want to understand how many properties in the City of Morden don't have low flow fixtures, and if we replace them with low flow fixtures, how much of a reduction will (that) have and how much savings we can plan on future upgrades."

The information gathered will help the city gauge the extent of the project, and allow it to budget and to determine the amount it is able to provide for a subsidy. Further details will be determined from the survey results. Click here to fill it out.
