It was a treat for sky watchers Tuesday evening. The Northern Lights were visible across the country including right here in Southern Manitoba.
Scott Young is the Manager of Science Communications at the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg. He explains why the sky came alive with colour last night.

The different colours visible in the Northern Lights are caused by particles from the sun interacting with different elements in the Earth's atmosphere.  Young says the more common colours are green, purple, blue and red.

He explains a second storm on the sun recently means there's a better chance of seeing Northern Lights tonight as long as the sky is clear. As the sun becomes more active in the next few years, Young says the Northern Lights will become increasingly visible.
