Don MacGillivray is the new head coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

MacGillivray, who has spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Wheat Kings, replaces Dave Lowry who was hired as an assistant coach by the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.

The Winnipeg native has a wealth of coaching experience having served behind the bench in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with the Portage Terriers, Neepawa Natives, St. James Canadiens and Winnipeg Blues. He guided the Terriers to a Turnbull Trophy championship in 2005 and did the same with the Blues in 2014. MacGillivray was named the MJHL Coach of the Year in 1995, 2005, 2012 and 2013.

MacGillivray was also the head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons for three seasons and was named Canada West Coach of the Year in 2008.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity and I’d like to thank the ownership and management of the Brandon Wheat Kings for entrusting me in this position,” said MacGillivray in the Wheat Kings media release. “I’m honoured, and I’m also grateful for the opportunity that I had working for Dave Lowry last season and David Anning the seasons previous.”

The 2020-21 Western Hockey season begins January 8th.

The Wheat Kings will compete in the East Division against the Winnipeg Ice, Regina Pats, Swift Current Broncos, Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders.
