A wildland fire continues to burn out of control in the Sandilands. But, Don Hallett with Manitoba Wildfire Service says crews are making good progress and the lack of wind today is helping the cause.

According to Hallett, crews are doing a good job of holding back the fire from spreading any further. He notes they continue to work with heavy equipment to try and surround the fire. With the help of water bombers they are attempting to keep the fire from spreading across the lines.

The fire, which broke out Saturday has so far consumed between 600 and 800 hectares of land. As of Sunday night, the fire was approximately four kilometres from the Sandilands community and 2.5 kilometres from Woodridge. Hallett says the cause of the fire is still under investigation by Conservation officers.

Municipal roads remain closed and spectators remain a major safety concern. Spectators impact and hinder fire response activities. The Sandilands Main Market Road is being used to move equipment, personnel and is unsafe for vehicle travel. The RM is concerned for the safety of the public. Residents are asked to not attend the fire scene.

According to the RM, to date there have been no injuries.
