Connor Bedard scored his second goal of the game 5:17 into overtime to lift Canada past Slovkia 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax. Dylan Guenther and Zack Ostapchuk also scored for the Canadians who will face the United States in the semifinals on Wednesday. Sweden will meet Czechia in the other semifinal. Bedard surpassed Jordan Eberle's record of 14 career goals and also eclipsed Eric Lindros' mark of 31 career points that was set in 1992. The 17-year-old Regina Pats forward also set the new Canadian single tournament points record of 18 which was previously owned by Dale McCourt (1977) and Brayden Schenn (2011).


The Manitoba Moose signed forward Brayden Burke to a professional tryout. The 26-year-old Edmonton native had seven goals and 23 assists in 46 games split between the Milwaukee Admirals and Ontario Reign during the 2021-22 AHL season. He added seven points (4G, 3A) in nine games during the 2022 Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to turning pro, Burke racked up 338 points (85G, 253A) in 238 WHL games split between the Moose Jaw Warriors, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Red Deer Rebels. The Moose also reassigned forward Colin Bilek to the ECHL's Trois-Rivières Lions.


Jake DeBrusk scored his second goal of the game with 2:24 left in the third period as the Boston Bruins edged the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 at the NHL Winter Classic in front of a sellout crowd of 39,243 at Fenway Park. Kasperi Kapanen scored in the second period for the Penguins who have lost five in a row. The Bruins extended their home point streak to 22 games (19-0-3), the longest in team history to start a season, breaking the 21-game record set in 1973-74. The Seattle Kraken have been awarded the 2024 Winter Classic. The Kraken will play the Vegas Golden Knights on New Year's Day at T-Mobile Park, which has a retractable roof, and will be the eighth baseball stadium to host the regular-season attraction.


Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin remains in critical condition after collapsing on the field Monday, and Buffalo's game against the Bengals in Cincinnati was postponed. Hamlin was administered C-P-R on the field. He was surrounded by teammates after he was hurt while tackling Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Hamlin got to his feet, appeared to adjust his face mask with his right hand, and then fell backward about three seconds later and lay motionless. He was rushed by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
