The 2022 Beijing Winter Games is over. Canada won its 26th and final medal Sunday as pilot Justin Kripps of Summerland, and brakemen Cam Stones of Whitby, Ryan Sommer of White Rock and Ben Coakwell of Sasktoon earned bronze in four-man bobsled. Canada captured four gold, eight silver 14 bronze medals. Canadian athletes placed fourth eight times and fifth nine times. The 26 medals won in Beijing matched Canada’s total in 2010 in Vancouver. Ottawa speedskater Isabelle Weidemann, who won gold, silver and bronze medals, was Canada’s flag bearer for the closing ceremonies. Eve Muirhead of Great Britain defeated Satsuki Fujisawa of Japan 10-3 in the women’s gold medal match in curling. Finland edged ROC 2-1 in the men’s hockey gold medal game.

 

Gavin Waltz, Justin Svenson and Trent Sambrook scored power play goals as the Winkler Flyers defeated the Steelers 6-2 in Selkirk. Brody Beauchemin, Dayton Kiesman and Sully Ross also scored for the Flyers. Dylan Meilun made 31 saves.

 

Logan Fillion and Cohen Thomas scored power play goals and Griffin Ayotte added a shorthanded marker as the Pembina Valley Hawks shaded the Yellowhead Chiefs 5-4. Keston Worley and Carter Campbell also scored for the Hawks who will play their final game of the 2021-22 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season this afternoon against the Chiefs in Morden. Pembina Valley was eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday after losing 3-0 to the Winnipeg Bruins. Hawks defenseman Carter Sotheran was named a First Team All-Star. The 16-year-old Sanford native has 19 goals and 34 assists in 39 games this season.

 

Ethan Kruger made 22 saves as Brandon edged the Broncos 2-1 in Swift Current. Ridly Greig and Zakhar Polshakov scored power play goals for the Wheat Kings who have won five-of-seven games this month. The Winnipeg Ice gave up three unanswered third period goals and lost 3-2 to the Rebels in Red Deer. Zach Benson and Jack Finley did the goal scoring for the Ice.

 

The Winnipeg Jets wrapped up their four-game homestand with a 4-2 loss to Edmonton. Oilers captain Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists. Adam Lowry potted a shorthanded goal midway through the third period and then Kyle Connor scored his team leading 29th goal of the season on the power play at 14:38 of the final frame to cut Edmonton’s lead to 3-2. Darnell Nurse sealed the deal for the Oilers with a shorthanded empty net goal with three seconds left in regulation.
