Cooped up dogs can be hard to handle, especially when it is too cold outside for them to burn off that extra energy.  Carol Derksen, who is an area dog trainer,  had heard on our station about dogs getting cooped up in the winter and developing cabin fever.  She came to us with a solution... The treadmill.

She talked about common signs that your pet might have cabin fever.

She also went over how we introduce the dog to running on the treadmill.

Derksen noted that a 5 Minute Walk/5 Minute Run/5 Minute Walk program would be good for small and medium dogs.  Large breed dogs could handle around 10 minutes of running.  She says you end up with a dog who is burning off extra energy and you won't have as many behavioral problems.

Here is a video that will give you an idea on how to train your dog on a treadmill.
