The Winkler Fire Department has established another way to communicate the fire danger level to city and area residents.

Fire Chief Richard Paetzold says they've installed a fire danger level sign on the front yard of the fire hall along Pembina Avenue.

Paetzold says they were being contacted by people who indicated that they don't have access to the internet or social media.

Callers would want to know whether it was safe to burn, if they were allowed to have a fire pit, or if they were a resident of the R.M. of Stanley, whether they could burn grass.

"This was just another communication piece that was put up to allow people to quickly drive by the hall on the way home after work, or while on an errand," says Paetzold. "It enables them to see real-time what we've established the danger level to be."

The sign is also a way for people that do have the technology but don't necessarily want to have the social media notifications turned on to alert them when there is a change.

Paetzold adds as they get requests for it, they may consider other means of communication, like sending out information with the municipal water bill.

Based on current conditions and experience, Paetzold says he would not be surprised if local burn bans would be put in place in the very near future.
