Western School Division is looking to replace the running track at Morden Collegiate.

The board recently established a capital reserve for the track as well as for upgrades to the playground equipment at Minnewasta, Maple Leaf and Ecole Morden Middle schools, up to $500,000.

Board Chair Brian Fransen explains part of the project would include expanding the track to the standard 400m size. "In the long run, we'd like to have a standard track, a nice running surface for our school and our community, something available to everyone."

While the total expense of the track upgrade is unknown at this time, Fransen says it would be a major project.

"It takes years of planning and putting money away," he says.

Playground upgrades also come with steep costs, but Fransen says it's important to maintain the equipment, "make sure that it's safe and something that kids are using."

Currently, he notes there's no timeline in place for the track replacement or playground upgrades.
