September 20 began a series of strikes where thousands of young people around the world will gather to protest the inaction of governments in the climate crisis.

Students are following the example of climate activist, 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who delivered an emotional speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit.

Today, students across Canada are joining Thunberg for #FridaysForFuture, requesting emergency measures of the scale the climate crisis demands. Winnipeg is one of those many cities, with students and those wanting change gathering outside the Legislative Building. Not only are they demanding action for the environment, but they are doing it in a manner that supports a just transition for workers and is rooted in the fundamental human rights of Indigenous peoples.

However, a Morden resident wanting to show her support felt driving to Winnipeg was counter to the cause, so she decided to organize an event on her doorstep.

Sandy Plett and other supporters of climate action met at the Morden Park to pray, make signs, and walked to Candice Bergen's office to deliver a copy of a letter of invitation and appeal to the MP and the government, asking for action with regards to climate change.

Plett says she debated on planning an event for some time but felt urged by God to do something for her community.

"We have this risk of people getting defensive or shutting us down, and I thought we have to be brave. We have to say these are our concerns and we want to raise them with hope, raise awareness, shout out we care about the world, and see who responds."

Plett is a mother of two, a 10 and 11-year-old, and spends a lot of time outside with her family. As she's learned about and seen the effects of climate change, she wants to create a healthy and sustainable world for her children and wants to share that message with government leaders.

ys Squires. "On this day of the Global Climate Strike, I am pleased to announce that our government will create a Youth Advisory Council to help guide the discussions and actions we take to mitigate climate change and implement our Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan with the goal of making Manitoba Canada's cleanest, greenest province."

The Manitoba government will also seek input from the Youth Advisory Council on its plan to eliminate the use of plastic bags, as outlined in the government's recently released 100-Day Action Plan.
