The wildland fire in the Sandilands continues to burn out of control.

Manitoba Conservation and Climate now estimates 1,880 hectares of land has burned. This is considerably more than what had been estimated over the last couple of days. However, it is the first opportunity the province has had to accurately map the perimeter of the fire without hindering firefighting efforts.

The Rural Municipality of Piney remains under a State of Local Emergency. There are numerous small fires still actively burning, and the majority of the fire activity continues to occur on the southwest side of the burn area. The RM has not had to evacuate any residences and no structures have been lost.

According to the RM of Piney, there are multiple water bombers and additional helicopters being used to fight the fire from the air. Heavy equipment is on standby. Municipal fire crews continue to assist provincial personnel as resources are needed. Ground crews continue to attack active hot spots.

The Sandilands Main Market Road remains closed, as crews continue to utilize this road for access to the burn area.

The municipality says that a lot of work has been accomplished over the past three days. The municipality remains confident in the efforts completed to protect lives and private property. The communities of Sandilands, Woodridge and St. Labre are not at risk. Travel to properties in these communities is permitted.
