The Boundary Trails Health Centre is purchasing a new and innovative piece of technology that will modernize the delivery of medication in the hospital's emergency department.

BTHC Foundation Chair Ben Friesen says, thanks to a generous $100,000 donation by the Canadian Medical Association Foundation, BTHC has purchased automated cabinets designed to dispense medications for patients.

"It just enhances safety when it comes to providing medications for patients and will support our health care staff in their efforts to provide dedicated patient care on the frontlines," says Friesen.

The money comes through the CMA Foundation's COVID-19 Community Hospital Fund and is part of its commitment to provide COVID-19 relief.

The BTHC Foundation applied for the grant and was awarded the funds to continue their ongoing work in support of the health centre in the community.

“Ensuring that appropriate medication therapy is initiated and administered on schedule is essential for patients receiving care in the hospital,” says Jane Curtis, CEO of Southern Health-Santé Sud. “The new Automatic Dispensing Cabinets will optimize medication safety and workflow efficiency so that patients in the hospital can get the medication they require right when they need it.”

According to Friesen, the high-tech cabinets come with a price tag of almost $100,000, which means the donation from the CMA Foundation will cover the full cost.

He adds the cabinets have been ordered and should be in use shortly.
