A wrestling champion with ties to Morden has set her sights on the Olympics.

Amber Wiebe will be travelling to Budapest, Hungary to compete in the wrestling Junior World Championships. If Wiebe wins a world medal in November in Budapest, she'll be added to the ladder for Olympic trials in December.

"It's been a long-term goal," she says, to represent her country at the Olympic Games.

Wiebe started wrestling at 10 years old in Morden, and in high school she started making waves in the Province. Wiebe competed at the 2015 National Juvenile Wrestling Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick and came home with a pair of medals.

However, her journey hasn't been easy. After high school she was recruited to a Regina university for wrestling but a few years later the wrestling program folded.

"It was really tough, I had my heart ripped out," she says.

Wiebe picked up and started a new life in B.C after being recruited to the University of the Fraser Valley for wrestling. Just when it seemed heartache was behind her, she found herself without a wrestling program a second time after the team lost funding last fall.

Now Wiebe trains with the wrestling program at Simon Fraser University. While she's been on an emotional rollercoaster, Wiebe says the sport has taught her mental toughness. "It's still easier to be the wrestler than it is to be the quitter."

Looking back, she's still filled with gratitude to be able to continue competing.

Previously, Wiebe competed at the 2015 National Juvenile Wrestling Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick and came home with a pair of medals.
