With spring in full swing we see more activity in our backyards and if you’re lucky you might spot a few honey bees visiting your garden. May 20th is World Bee Day and there are many ways you can celebrate and support our local bee population!

“The easiest thing you can do is grow flowers,” suggests Ian Steppler, Chairman of the Manitoba Beekeepers’ Association. Steppler says that flowers are bee food; “The pollen provides them their protein and the nectar provides them their sugars which gives them the energy to be active”

Steppler says World Bee Day is a nice recognition to the beekeeping industry. “We do provide benefit to not only the agricultural landscape, but also to most people who have a garden.”
