Kale Ilchena scored in the 10th round of the shootout to lift the Carman Beavers past the Altona Maroons 6-5 at Sunflower Gardens. Ilchena, Tyler Slobogian, Ben Dalke, Tyler Park and Fraser Mirrlees scored in regulation for the Beavers. Justin Augert had a hat trick and Adam Henry had a goal and four assists for the Maroons. Robert Guimond had the other Altona goal. The Maroons are three points back of the Winkler Royals who hold down the eighth and final playoff spot in the SEMHL. Carman is four points back of Winkler. All three teams have five games left in the regular season schedule.


Canada will face Czechia Saturday in the semifinals at the 2024 World Women’s U18 Hockey Championship in Zug, Switzerland. Sienna D’Alessandro of Pointe-Claire scored twice and Chloe Primerano of North Vancouver had three assists as Canada shutout the host Swiss 6-0 in the quarterfinals. The United States will meet Finland in the other semifinals.


The Winnipeg Jets winning streak has reached a franchise record eight games. Gabriel Vilardi scored the tying goal with 3:29 left in the third period and Nikolaj Ehlers potted the go-ahead goal with 75 seconds remaining as Winnipeg defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 at Canada Life Centre. Laurent Brossoit made 20 saves in net for the Jets who extended their points streak to 14 games. Winnipeg forward Mark Scheifele left the game early in the second period with a lower-body injury and did not return.


Brad Lambert will represent the Manitoba Moose at the American Hockey League All-Star Classic next month in San Jose. The Winnipeg Jets first round pick in the 2022 NHL draft, has 11 goals and 13 assists in 26 games this season with the Moose.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed pitcher Marshall Kasowski. The 28-year-old Conroe, Texas native was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 13th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and spent six seasons in their organization.
