The reeve for the RM of Stanley is urging ratepayers to adhere to the fire ban that has been issued by the municipality, or stronger measures may need to be taken. A complete burn ban is in place in the municipality which includes fire pits, burn barrels and controlled burns of any kind.

Reeve Morris Olafson says emergency crews are being called out to extinguish fires that should never have started in the first place.

"We are in a fire ban, so please understand that. Leave your matches at home and do not light a match. That includes all the burn barrels in the villages, fire pits in the backyards, all of that."

Conditions in the municipality are extremely dry right now, says Olafson, and if residents choose to ignore the burn ban, the RM may have to take stronger measures.

"I hate to go the route of penalizing people for lighting fires when they shouldn't be, but we are strongly considering putting in some measures that could include fines for doing stuff that they shouldn't be doing. It's not the route I want to go, that's for sure."

Olafson says the fire that broke out in the community of Hochfeld earlier this week and destroyed a home, is a reminder of how quickly a fire can spread in these arid conditions.
