With temperatures turning to the double digits, and the above average conditions expected to last through the weekend and potentially the first half of next week, the Altona Recreation Department is asking residents to stay off the ice at the Buffalo Creek Nature Pond.

"As the warmer temperatures approach, and the ice begins to recede from the pond's edge, the Town of Altona Recreation Departments wants to remind everyone about the importance of ice safety," noted a statement shared with PembinaValleyOnline. "Although the ice may still be fairly thick, it's crucial to err on the side of caution. Please avoid walking or playing on the ice, especially near the edges where it is more likely to be fragile. Safety is our top priority, and we want everyone to enjoy the changing seasons responsibly."

Open water has started to appear around the edges of the pond, and with the warm weather and sunshine to come, the ice will continue to degrade.

The forecast for Friday is mainly sunny, with a daytime high of 13 degrees.
