Vintage snowmobile enthusiasts squared off Saturday in Letellier for the 7th annual Snowcrusher 100 event.

The 100 mile race features single-cylinder sleds from 1973 and older competing in three classes - HR, HD and 50/50 (50 years old/50 miles).

Despite a shy snowfall accumulation leading up to the race, volunteers managed to pull together a track for this weekend.

"We picked around the field to get as much snow as we can. There's enough to have the race," said organizer Russell Calder heading into the event. "These old machines have seen a little dirt in the past, too."

The course also looked a bit different this year as an alfalfa crop is sitting on the field where the track is usually groomed. Instead, racers were taken further east along the Aux Marais River.

According to Calder, the annual Le Mans-style race attracts about 50 riders from across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and northern U.S. states like North Dakota and Minnesota.

Originally started as a fund raiser to help build a new community hall, that goal has since been achieved and Calder says the money raised now benefits other areas in town.

"The (Letellier) Athletics Association has actually taken over the race and they're fund raising goes towards our skating rink, the hall and the community park," explained Calder. He believes funds raised this year will be dedicated to new playground equipment at the park.

Totals are still being calculated from Saturday's race, but Calder says the event typically raises anywhere between $4,000 and $9,000 each year.
