Winkler Mayor Martin Harder illustrates a point during council's meeting with officials from the Association of Manitoba of Municipalities

Protective services funding from the Provincial government, and dollars from the Federal government for infrastructure were two of the areas touched on during a meeting between Winkler city council and officials from the Association of Manitoba Municipalities .

Mayor Martin Harder raised concerns regarding the province's willingness to support police services in Brandon and Winnipeg, yet Winkler receives no direct funding for its force.

The A.M.M. reps indicated they'd heard similar concerns from other area municipalities, and stated it's an issue they've raised with Manitoba's Justice Minister. Harder also talked about how the city's Building Canada Fund application for its new fire hall was turned down.

The A.M.M. reps noted Winkler wasn't the only community to have a fire hall project turned down by the Building Canada Fund. Harder also raised concerns over the dramatic increase in school taxes residents have seen over the last couple of years.

Harder says the bottom line is the province needs to look at alternative ways to fund school divisions.
