Frigid and frosty will be the theme for much of the coming Louis Riel Weekend, with temperatures remaining well below average for this time of year, and Extreme Cold Warnings more than likely staying in place until some time Monday.

"That ridge of arctic high pressure that settled in last weekend, continues to be the weather-maker on the eastern Prairies," explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner early Friday morning. "It's continuing to allow bitterly cold air to take up residency in Southern Manitoba."

Highs Friday in the Pembina Valley will be in the -27 range, but areas further west may barely reach -30.

"That would be the first time in years a location in Southern Manitoba didn’t surpass -30 for a high."

Looking ahead, Saturday won’t be much warmer, maybe a degree or two according to Sumner. Sunday will be a little better as temperatures rise to -23 during the day.

"Monday is when the moderation really kicks in as that ridge starts to break down, allowing warmer air to move back into the area," said Sumner. "I stress, though, relatively warmer air. Highs for most of next week will still be below average, around -14 to -16 during the day."

Sumner added the long range forecast models are suggesting we could see a return to seasonal temperatures some time next weekend. At the point seasonal would be around -7 or so.

"Bottom line, our Frosty Friend Old Man Winter is here to stay for a few more days, so be sure to dress appropriately and keep those long johns and extra socks handy," chuckled Sumner.
