The City of Winkler is seeing a small decline in the number of residential homes being built this year.

Director of Planning and Engineering Bill Zacharias says as of the end of June, 44 permits had been taken out for a total of nearly $6.5 million compared to 51 permits at this time last year.

Zacharias says it is difficult to keep up with the record numbers set in all of 2005 when 93 single family permits were taken for a total of nearly $13 million.

However, Zacharias adds commercial and industrial permits are up this year.
