There is no lack of summer projects to be done in the Western School Division this year.

Superintendent Stephen Ross says it's a very busy summer. Ross says they were very pleased to receive some additional funding this past spring to put toward a number of items on their capital list.

"That money, coupled with money the board puts in every year for summer projects, is about half a million dollars that's going towards things like rebuilding science labs in the high school, air conditioning projects...bit lighting project for energy efficient lighting throughout the division as well."

Floor tile was replaced in 12 MCI classrooms.

Ross says there is also ground re-development work taking place at the middle school. He explained there will be new soil brought in, and grass planted on the ground that was left with a lot of gravel after the land was reclaimed after the removal of the former poultry plant that used to be on that corner. "The school and the parent advisory council have asked for that to be refurbished, so that's the project that's going on there right now."

The design stage for two additions at Morden Collegiate is complete now and will hopefully be moving into the tendering process within a couple of weeks. Ross says the hope would be to begin construction on the new piping trades addition and classroom addition in fall.

Meanwhile, the design process of Morden's new k-8 school is moving along. With nearly 20 portables now throughout the Western School Division, Ross says it's exciting to be in this phase.

"We're currently in the functional design stage. Basically that means going through the document that says these are the kinds of spaces you can have in a school, and what spaces you need in a school like that...I think the community has lots of really good things to look forward to."

The new 80,000 square foot school will also include a daycare centre with approximately 75 spaces.

If all goes to plan, Ross says they would like the plan done in order to have the school go to tender as early as next spring.

The soccer field at EMMS is getting upgraded with top soil and being reseeded.
